Why this Project
Volunteer Maasai is a small organisation run by an Irish woman and a Maasai man. It is a grass roots initiative that was created out of a need expressed by the Maasai people themselves, to enable their tribe to maintain their strong traditions while adapting to the rapidly changing world. The sole aim of this project is to provide education in the marginalised Maasai community and implement locally sustainable community based projects that equip, educate and empower the local people.
Volunteer Maasai is working with the local community of Lomiyon, Lomiyon is located in the Lake Manyara area of Northern Tanzania.
Idimayii Maasai School Project is the first project to be initiated under Volunteer Maasai. The school was founded in April 2012 after the community expressed an interest to have their children educated and address the inequalities faced by the Masaai people. Idimayii in the Maa language means "it is possible".
Idimayii is a pre school with over 60 children to date attending class aged between 3 - 7. The integration of western and Maasai educational learning systems are used to relieve ignorance and poverty and seen as vital to the success of the Maasai people following the priorities, needs and interests of the Maasai community. Our goal is to build a school that will provide education hope and a better future for our children. This is a long term project and we view local ownership as vital. The project aims to employ the skills of the local community to build and contribute to the project and programme.
Typically, Maasai children enter First Grade at age seven without prior exposure to classroom-based teaching, without basic skills such as counting and writing, and without an understanding of Swahili, which is the only legally permitted language, other than English, in schools.
